Installation Guide for Philips Hue Twilight

To install and set up your Philips Hue Twilight, you will need a Philips Hue Bridge, the Philips Hue app, and the Twilight lamp itself. The installation process involves a simple physical setup followed by in-app pairing and customization.

Physical Setup

  • Assemble the lamp: Connect the power adapter cable to the base of the lamp.

  • Plug it in: Plug the power adapter into a compatible wall outlet.

  • Position the lamp: Place the Twilight on your bedside table or another desired surface. The front light can be swiveled almost 180 degrees to direct the illumination.

Using the Philips Hue Twilight with the Hue Bridge

Setting up your Philips Hue Bridge requires a physical connection to your router and a digital connection using the Philips Hue app on your smartphone. The process is quick and enables control of all your Hue smart lights and accessories.

Before you begin

  • Gather components: Have your Hue Bridge, its power adapter, and the included Ethernet cable ready.

  • Install the Hue app: Download the latest version of the Philips Hue app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

  • Connect to Wi-Fi: Ensure your smartphone is connected to the same Wi-Fi network that your Hue Bridge will use.

  • Keep the QR code handy: Locate the QR code on the bottom of the bridge. You will need to scan it during the setup process.

Hardware setup

  1. Connect the power: Plug the Hue Bridge's power adapter into an electrical outlet.

  2. Connect to the router: Use the included Ethernet cable to connect one end to the bridge and the other to an available port on your Wi-Fi router.

  3. Wait for the lights: Once connected, wait a few moments for the three blue LED indicator lights on the bridge to turn solid. This confirms it is powered on and connected to your network.

Bridge and app setup

You must have a Hue Bridge already set up and connected to your Wi-Fi network before adding the Twilight lamp.

  1. Install the Hue app: Download the Philips Hue app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store if you haven't already.

  2. Open the app: Ensure your phone is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Hue Bridge and open the app.

  3. Go to settings: Navigate to the "Settings" tab in the app and tap "Devices".

  4. Add a new device: Tap the blue plus sign (+) in the top right corner.

  5. Scan the QR code: Locate and scan the QR code on the bottom of the

Twilight lamp or its packaging. This automatically adds the device. If the QR code is missing, the app will offer a manual search option.

  6. Add to a room: Follow the on-screen instructions to assign the

Twilight to a specific room, such as the bedroom. This helps with organization, especially if you have multiple Hue products.

  7. Name the lamp: Name your new Twilight lamp so you can easily identify it in the app.

Using the app for control and customization

With the lamp successfully paired, you can customize its features through the Hue app.

  1. Cycle through scenes: The app allows you to cycle through a variety of preset scenes, including different shades of white and colored lighting effects.

  2. Create routines: Set up "Go to sleep" and "Wake up" routines. The Twilight is specifically designed for this, with a built-in function to simulate a cozy sunset by slowly dimming the lights over time.

  3. Adjust the lighting: Control the brightness and color of both the front-facing light and the rear "wall washer" effect, which can display up to three different colors.

  4. Assign button actions: Use the app to customize the actions of the two physical buttons on the top of the lamp. You can assign them to control specific scenes or automations.

Controlling with the physical buttons

Once customized, you can use the physical buttons on the Twilight lamp for quick control.

  1. Dot button: A short press can activate a preset "Nighttime" or nightlight scene.

  2. Hue button: A long press can start the "Go to sleep" automation, simulating a sunset by gradually dimming the light.

5 Creative Ideas Using the Philips Hue Twilight

Highlight architectural features

The Philips Hue Twilight's back light, with its ColorCast technology, can be used to add dimension to a room.

  • Idea: Place the Twilight lamp on a console table or shelf and direct the back light toward an interesting wall feature, like a textured wall or a gallery of framed art.

  • Setup: Use the Hue app to select a subtle gradient to match the art or complement the room's color scheme. A cool, colorful light can transform a bare wall into an eye-catching accent.

Create a dynamic, animated scene

Use the Hue app to set dynamic scenes for your Twilight, where the colors move and change subtly over time.

  • Idea: Mimic natural elements by setting a scene that transitions slowly through various colors. For instance, a "roaring fireplace" or "twinkling stars" effect can create a cozy and mesmerizing atmosphere.

  • Setup: Experiment with the Twilight's dual light sources by setting the swiveling front light to a warm, low glow while the back light displays a dynamic effect, such as the "Fireplace" or "Candle" effect, for a multi-layered light experience.

Use it as a functional timer

The Twilight's ability to change color and dim over time can be used to set visual timers for your family.

  • Idea: Create a visual cue for daily routines, like telling your kids it's almost bedtime.

  • Setup: In the Hue app, create an automation that changes the Twilight's back light from one color to another. For example, set the light to a cheerful green for homework time, which then fades to a warning yellow and finally a calming red when it is time to stop.

Improve focus for reading and working

The Twilight can be used for more than just a wind-down routine. The front light is excellent for providing task lighting for reading and other activities.

  • Idea: Create a custom scene that provides the ideal light for reading or concentrating.

  • Setup: The Hue app offers a wide spectrum of white light options, ranging from warm to cool. Set the swiveling front light to a bright, cool daylight tone (around 6500K) to improve focus and concentration, while turning the back light off.

Simulate a personalized holiday display

With the Twilight's full-color capabilities and ColorCast gradient technology, you can create holiday-themed displays that project onto a wall.

  • Idea: Set the mood for any holiday by creating a custom-colored scene.

  • Setup: For Halloween, create an orange and purple gradient on the back light. For Christmas, choose a red-and-green theme. The ColorCast technology will create a seamlessly blended color effect on the wall behind the lamp for a decorative holiday accent.
